We are very familiar with the destructive nature of natural disasters. Very often, without much warning, our lives can be turned upside down by some type of natural disaster. In such situations we may not have very much time to leave our homes, that is why we need to plan in advance for an emergency. How can we do this?

Have a go-bag packed and ready. As we mentioned, in an emergency situation you may not have time to gather everything you need before you leave, so having a well-prepared go back ready will be a great help. What do you need in your go-bag? Among the items, you should include are water and food for at least 3 days, an extra supply of medication if you need it, copies of important documents, a change of clothes, toiletries, and some cash. As well as a go-bag, it is also good to keep extra bottles of water and nonperishable food in your home.

Another thing that you need to sort out ahead of time is your emergency evacuation route and meet-up points, in case you are separated from loved ones. Keep in mind, the meet-up points and routes may be different, depending on the disaster.

Keeping your home in good order will also help during a disaster. Having trees well-trimmed and gutters cleared out regularly will help prevent extra damage to your property. You should also know where your shut-off valves are for water, electricity, and gas, and have easy access to them. A lot of damage can be prevented by turning these off ahead of the storm.
